I have come to realise that the most wonderful and valuable

In today’s world when everyone is trying to squeeze as much out of 24 hours as possible, it is easy to be distracted and forget the fundamentally important things in life.

Once a week when I go to COH, I am reminded that things which most people consider minor or mundane - can be extremely important and meaningful to others, who are in a different position.

For most people, going shopping or having a coca cola is nothing out of the ordinary. But if you are disabled or come from a disadvantaged family, being able to purchase some groceries from an air-condition outlet can be the highlight of the week.

For most of us, going for a stroll is no big deal. But if you are handicapped or born with Down Syndrome - without a caregiver holding your hand and looking out for you - you will not be able to even cross the road.

For many of us, washing and drying dishes is for the maid or washing machine. But if you are disadvantaged and unable to work, this may be the only way by which you are able to achieve a sense of satisfaction or self-worth. Through my volunteering at Christian Outreach to the Handicapped (COH), I am brought back to basics, and am reminded to appreciate the small but really important things in life, and the blessings which God has so generously bestowed on me.

I see with my own eyes, the love and unselfishness of teachers like Harjit, Guan Huat and Savi just to name a few of the staffs in COH, and how their love of God is manifested in their care of the less fortunate and needy.

I am blessed to have special people like Lin Han, Lydia, Kwang Wei treat me as a real friend and appreciate me, not because of anything but simply because like them, I am a creation of God our Father.

Most of all I have come to realise that the most wonderful and valuable gift which God can give to us, is the gift of faith, peace and contentment. if one is prepared to accept these blessings and trust God, one can be happier than the richest man on earth. Without these gifts, the richest man on the earth can still be miserable, dissatisfied and forever fearful.
