It's impossible to get away the Yuletide spirit on a trip to Iceland throughout the holidays - a vacation to Reykjavik will be loaded with an engulfing quantity of Christmas good cheer. The city goes wild for an excellent Christmas party, and begins ringing in the season at the end of November, with the lighting of the town's Xmas tree at Austurvöllur square. The merriment features choirs singing carols and the arrival of the first of the "Vacation Lads," 13 Santas who show up across town through Lent.
Other preferred vacation spectacles consist of the Xmas Village in Hafnarfjörður town, a small, cheery town chock-full of businesses offering for sale vacation gifts and traditional foods amidst live activities, and a visit to Reykjavik's primary X-mas Marketplace in Ingólfstorg Square, which fills with merchants offering holiday season gifts, mulled wine and performances from a plethora of musician and performers.
To have an old-fashioned, Nordic Christmas, visit the Xmas exhibition at the Reykjavik City Museum, where exhibits display how fried bread is crafted, tallow is employed to make candle lights, and visitors can learn traditional Yuletide tunes and dances.
